The UKWCKFA is
one of the largest martial arts and self-defence organisations in the UK.
With approaching fifty five branches and over three thousand students, the
organisation offers an effective and professional method of instruction in
which our students abilities are a testimony to our teaching abilities.
Our North
London Centre of Excellence runs a range of classes for all ages and skill
levels. Students are initially separated by age and ability, i.e. adults and
children do not train together. However, our adult pupils are able to attend
additional classes that range from a series of short general martial arts
courses to fitness training sessions held specifically for the martial artist.
Our classes include:
- Beginners
Course: Induction
into our classes involves a short beginners course. The beginners training
course allows us to introduce the perspective student to an overview of
the principles, philosophy and simplistic self-defence techniques of Wing
Chun Kung Fu. A
typical beginners course contains four beginners classes a week (16 lessons
per course), that introduces the student to the martial art, the philosophy,
principles and training methods of Wing Chun Kung Fu. In addition to these
classes optional 'Strength and Conditioning' training classes are also timetabled
each week for beginners (minimum 12 classes per course). Strength and Conditioning
classes allow students to focus on the fitness aspect of martial arts training,
separately from their martial arts experience.
- Many martial
arts involve years of dedicated training and often require high levels
of physical fitness which are often an unrealistic expectation of the
general public. Our beginners' courses require no great degree of flexibility,
fitness, strength, special clothing or equipment, just an attentive
mind. Our instructors are certified by the St John's Ambulance Association
in first aid and some are also trained in oriental medicine.
- Beginners/
Intermediate/ Advanced Classes: Following completion of
our beginners course, students usually continue their training within a
beginners class. From here students are expect to progress at their own
speed through the intermediate level into the advanced level of Wing Chun
Kung Fu.
- Open
Level Classes: The school runs a series of
short monthly course that are open to all levels of students. These courses
range from introduction to Lok Sau, Single Chi Sau, Sparring, Boxing, Empty
Hand forms and other dynamic wing chun skills. Students off all levels are
given the opportunity to meet, train and focus on very specific skills that
will improve progress through the Wing Chun System.
- Strength&
Conditioning Classes:
Students of all levels are able to attend weekly fitness & conditioning
sessions that not only encourage Cardio Vascular development, but striking
(punching & kicking) skills as well. Beginners are encouraged to attend
these sessions, since Strength and Conditioning classes allow new students
to focus on the fitness aspect of their martial arts training. A typical
Strength and Conditioning class involves boxing on focus pads, heavy bags
and physical exercise using body weight and some light weight dumbbells.
The classes are designed to raise your level of fitness in order improve
your self defence ability, hence fitness sessions are based around preparation
for combat unlike many gyms and health clubs.
- Under
16 Classes: Children and young adults are taught separately
from adults due to their differing needs and skill levels. Generally both
groups are taught the value of respect, humility and alternative (non violent)
ways of dealing with confrontations. Note, young Adults are taught the adult
syllabus and therefore can advance through the Wing Chun system in parallel
to adult classes.
- Ladies
Only Beginners Courses: We also offer short
beginners courses for ladies only. These courses cover an introduction to
Wing Chun, but are also designed to focus on aspects of inter personal violence
such as Sexual Assault and Male Aggression. NB. This course only serves
as an introduction and and would not replace training with male students.
